Blind Faith

Foreword

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
Genesis 1:1

It is interesting to note that the very first statement in the Bible–accepted by faith by every true believer–destroys the very foundation of both the atheist and the evolutionist.

I made the above statement a couple of years ago and received the following reply from a young self-proclaimed atheist:

“So simple… I couldn’t have said it better myself. It simply doesn’t matter how much evidence piles up on the side of evolution because there is a holy book from the Bronze Age that tells us exactly how it all happened. Science and logic are completely useless when up against such blind faith.”

This little essay is my response….

Actually, my faith is not as blind as you might think, thank you very much…..

I actually believe the Bible to be the basis for and foundation of all TRUE science and logic. What you are saying is not new. Actually, before you were even born I had examined arguments such as yours and abandoned them as superficial, frivolous and specious.

I still don’t understand why it seems so ridiculous to atheists and evolutionists that someone would believe that God created everything from nothing, considering the alternative (i.e., that everything randomly and spontaneously came from nothing).

I contend that evolutionists must back all the way up to square zero–literally nothing, if you please. No matter, no energy, no time, no space, no forces, no laws of physics, no light, no sound, no gravity, no inertia…. and, of course, because they’re evolutionists, no God.

Now, let the evolution begin…. Let something–anything–just randomly and spontaneously materialize from nothing, with no external forces or laws or power: no protons, no electrons, no neutrons, no neutrinos, no quarks, no photons, no electricity, no magnetism, no fire…. I guess we’d still be waiting, because it’s just not going to happen. Nothing cannot spontaneously produce Something, and Chaos cannot randomly produce Order.

Even though I know it didn’t happen this way, to me it is comparatively simple to imagine life springing from the much-touted pre-biotic ooze, contrasted with what a leap it must have been for matter and energy and light and natural laws to have sprung from nothing.

Evolutionism is nothing but a hypocritical sham unless it can give us some proof and evidence, something tangible, to show how matter and light and energy and all the intricate inter-connected wonders of our universe simply evolved from nothing. You can’t start with a big bang or a black hole. There can be no external force. You have to start with NOTHING. And then, everything has to happen spontaneously by random chance–no intelligent, coherent body of knowledge and rational, logical thought giving everything purpose and potential.

Faith seems blind until it is understood that “the things not seen are eternal”–i.e., spiritual. It is natural for someone desperately trying to avoid a meaningful spiritual relationship with God to seek to disprove His existence. And the only way to believe that God does not exist is to accept The Lie that He is not needed–everything attributed to God and His miraculous works can somehow be accounted for by an alternative, ‘natural’ explanation.

Afterword

Imagine visiting a large museum filled with great paintings that are masterpieces. Upon close examination, it is determined that each painting contains identical characteristics–the same brush strokes, same paint, same range of theme and artistic composition…. Imagine how brilliant it would be to suggest that each piece of art had slowly evolved from one of the other pieces of art instead of coming to the conclusion that each painting was the product of the same artist since they all bore the same “signature.” Would it be all the more awe-inspiring to think that all these paintings slowly evolved from a single first painting that somehow mysteriously materialized at some point in the remote past? How amused the artist would be at such a suggestion! And how much more amused would he be at the insistence of some of the visitors to his exhibit that there was no artist. Sounds silly, doesn’t it?

There simply is no substitute for sanity!

“Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:”
Romans 1:19-20
