Some Shall Depart From The Faith

“Now the spirit speaketh expressly that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having the conscience seared with a hot iron.”

–1 Timothy 4:1

We sometimes get so caught up in the grimness of this prophecy that we fail to find any hope projected from it. But careful examination of this verse should give us a ray of hope tempered with caution. Note especially the key word “some.” For lack of a more scientific definition, let us define the word “some” as “not all.” With this definition in mind, the explicit words of the spirit to us in this passage seem to take on a more positive light:

In the latter times not all shall depart from the faith!

Those who have lived for God for many years have seen many folks come and go to and from the Church. And most of the time it is not pleasant to see people leave. If we’re not careful we can fall into a mental trap and begin to feel like it is the will of God for people to fall into apostasy. Would to God we could learn that God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance; and He would have all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth! (2 Peter 3:9 & 1 Timothy 2:4) Though some will depart from the faith, we must take courage in the fact that not all will do so.

Not all saints are going to rebel; not all young people are going to run after the fads and fashions of the world. Not all children will be disobedient to their parents; not all homes are going break up and fall apart. Not every man will be seduced into sexual sin by the rampant, unrestrained porn-driven entertainment industry; not every woman will allow herself to be used by evil spirits to seduce men with immodest apparel and ungodly attire. Some will, but not all!

Not all church members are going to quit praying and fasting and giving. Not all musicians will give themselves over to the ungodly, satanic influence of rock and roll, rap  and other contemporary sinful music. Some will, but not all!

Not all pastors will compromise the message and sell out for the sake of numerical growth. Not all evangelists will sacrifice their conscience on the altar of expediency and for the sake of filthy lucre prostitute the most sacred calling on earth. Not all preachers will temporize and equivocate because of organizational pressures from without and constituency pressures from within. Some will, but not all!

So take heart, fellow Soldier of the Cross! Though there are many who are turned aside after satan on the broad way to destruction, the faithful few are still on the strait and narrow road that leads to Eternal Life!
