Spiritual Deformity

2 Samuel 4:4

And Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.

The late Elder Verbal Bean preached a message many years ago using this text…. His title: “Somebody dropped the baby.” It’s a sad but true fact that one generation’s carelessness about spiritual matters can have a crippling effect on the generation coming behind.

A.W. Tozer said, “There are areas in our lives where in our effort to be right we may go wrong, so wrong as to lead to spiritual deformity.”

He listed five specifics:

1. When in our determination to be bold we become brazen.
2. When in our desire to be frank we become rude.
3. When in our effort to be watchful we become suspicious.
4. When we seek to be serious and become somber.
5. When we mean to be conscientious and become over-scrupulous.

Imbalance is not a good thing. To be lopsided is no compliment to one’s walk with God. And I have lived long enough to see it happen again and again that when one, in seeking balance, seems to pull away in another’s eyes, he often is misjudged as compromising and in retreat. That can be the case obviously; but, that is not necessarily the case every time.

Again, Tozer said that “Truth is like a bird; it cannot fly on one wing. Yet we are forever trying to take off with one wing flapping furiously and the other tucked neatly out of sight.”

This is something that should be published all across the land! I’m no Tozer, but I have also observed these very things in the course of my few short years.

Expressed in the vernacular of the renowned philosopher, Ray Stevens, sometimes the cure is worse than the disease!

I have been diagnosed with a disease (myasthenia gravis) which is an auto-immune disorder that presents as a grave muscle weakness. There is no known cause and there is no known cure for this condition. My doctor explained it to me like this: my immune system is hyper-vigilant, and it is attacking perfectly healthy parts of my body and thus causing a diseased state.

What cruel irony!

Even sadder still is to see this very condition at work spiritually, when the immune system of the Body of Christ (e.g., ministry) attacks perfectly healthy aspects of the Body with the end result being (in Tozer’s words) “spiritual deformity”.
